904L stainless steel wire mesh is a superaustenitic stainless steel alloy originally developed to have excellent corrosion resistance to environments containing dilute sulfuric acid.
Today, it is used in a broad range of different process environments, including in both inorganic and organic acid settings. With high chromium (21%), nickel (25.5%), molybdenum (4.5%), and copper (1.5%) content, 904L stainless steel wire mesh possesses great resistance to general corrosion. Its chromium and molybdenum additions further provide 904L with superior resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and chloride stress corrosion cracking as compared to T-316L. In cases where cost is a factor, 2205 duplex is often substituted for 904L given its similar corrosion resistance, higher mechanical strength, and lower cost (keep in mind, however, 2205 duplex should not be used above 570°F). In cases where both higher corrosion resistance and strength are required, 2507 super duplex or ZERON® 100 super duplex are often substituted in place of 904L. Withstands outdoor exposure without rusting.
Good fatigue strength & excellent corrosion resistance in severe industrial and chemical settings.
Good resistance to inorganic acids (i.e. hot phosphoric acid) as well as most organic acids.
Lower resistance to nitric acid vs. T-304L (which is free of molybdenum).
Best used in temperatures below 750°F (undergoes embrittlement at higher temperatures).
Easily welded, more difficult to cut and form than T-316L (thus, higher cutting forces are required).
